給付日額とは何か — What Is the Daily Benefit Amount?

Japan's unemployment insurance pays a daily benefit amount (基本手当日額 / Kihon Teate Nichigaku) for each certified day of unemployment. Understanding how this figure is calculated helps you plan your finances during your job search period.

Step 1: Calculate Your Average Daily Wage (賃金日額)

The starting point is your 賃金日額 (Chingin Nichigaku) — your average daily wage during the 6 months before separation.

The formula is:

賃金日額 = Total wages earned in last 6 months ÷ 180

Important notes on what counts as "wages":

  • Included: Base salary, fixed allowances (commuting, housing, etc.), overtime pay
  • Excluded: Bonuses (賞与), extraordinary payments paid less than 3 times per year

The 賃金日額 is subject to both a minimum floor and a maximum ceiling set by the government each year. These amounts are adjusted annually, typically in August, so always check the current figures on the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (厚生労働省) website.

Step 2: Apply the Benefit Rate (給付率)

Your daily benefit is not 100% of your average wage. A sliding scale is applied: lower-wage earners receive a higher replacement rate, while higher-wage earners receive a lower rate. The range is typically 50%–80% of your 賃金日額.

Daily Wage Range Approximate Benefit Rate
Lower range ~80%
Middle range ~60%–70%
Upper range ~50%

Workers aged 60–64 have a slightly different rate structure due to age-based adjustments.

Step 3: Determine Your Total Benefit Days (所定給付日数)

The number of days you can receive benefits depends on three factors: your age, your reason for leaving, and how long you were enrolled in employment insurance.

For Involuntary Separation (特定受給資格者 / Company-Reason)

Age 1–5 years enrolled 5–10 years 10–20 years 20+ years
Under 30 90 days 90 days 120 days 180 days
30–34 90 days 120 days 180 days 210 days
35–44 90 days 150 days 180 days 240 days
45–59 90 days 180 days 240 days 270 days
60–64 90 days 150 days 180 days 210 days

For Voluntary Resignation (一般離職者)

Regardless of age, voluntary resignees receive:

  • Under 10 years enrolled: 90 days
  • 10–20 years enrolled: 120 days
  • 20+ years enrolled: 150 days

Estimating Your Total Benefit Amount

Once you know your daily benefit amount and total days, your estimated total payout is simply:

Total Benefit = 基本手当日額 × 所定給付日数

For example, if your daily benefit is ¥6,000 and you qualify for 120 days, your total potential benefit is ¥720,000 — paid out in roughly monthly installments over your benefit period.

Factors That Can Reduce Your Payment

  • Part-time work during the benefit period — earnings above a threshold reduce that day's benefit proportionally.
  • Receiving a retirement allowance (退職金) — may affect wage calculations in some cases.
  • Finding employment early — stops payments but may trigger the 再就職手当 (re-employment allowance) if you qualify.

Don't Miss the 再就職手当 (Re-employment Bonus)

If you find a job before exhausting all your benefit days, you may be eligible for a lump-sum 再就職手当 (Saishūshoku Teate). This is a bonus paid for finding work early — a strong incentive to keep actively job hunting. The amount depends on how many benefit days remain when you accept the new job.
